4 Things We’ve Learned from Teaching Swimming

Learning how to swim can be a big step in your kids’ future. There are a lot of things to learn; from floating in the water, to paddling around, to pool safety. Over the past 25 years, we’ve taught countless children how to swim, and we have learned a few things ourselves along the way.

Here’s what we’ve learned from teaching kids to swim:

  1. Begin with basics, then take simple steps. This begins with showing your baby what the water feels life, and slowly building from there. Learning fundamental lessons early, such as how to breathe and remain comfortable in the water, lead to long term success.

  2. Constant, positive reinforcement is key. Celebrating new accomplishments, no matter how small, help build a sense of growth and confidence in kids. This keeps children motivated, and allows them to challenge themselves more and more.

  3. Any challenge can be overcome, with the right support. We’ve seen kids go from crying at the sight of water to excitedly jumping into the pool, ready for their swimming class. Learning how to swim is a big challenge, but, kids are resilient. With the combined support of parents, coaches, and peers, any challenge can be overcome.

  4. Swimming is fun! Although swimming lessons are designed for your kids to learn a crucial skill, they are also designed to be fun. Splashing around in the water is not only a good form of exercise, but it’s also great fun for the kids. Furthermore, a long swim in the pool can be tiring, giving parents some fun relaxation time while their sleepy little ones are resting.

Learning how to swim ensures your child’s basic safety in the water, but learning how to become a better swimmer can allow them to feel more accomplished and more confident in the water. Our Spring swimming lessons are open and we welcome everyone to our classes.  Join us today by registering here http://www.swimclo.com/register

5 Steps to Become a Better Swimmer

Swimming is a crucial skill to acquire. The most obvious reason for this is because knowing how to swim can ensure your child’s safety in the water. However, swimming is also a great skill which provides many other benefits. For example, swimming is a great form of physical exercise, a source of confidence building and a fun activity for kids to enjoy during the summer months.

Learning how to swim ensures your child’s basic safety in the water, but learning how to become a better swimmer can allow them to feel more accomplished and more confident in the water.

So...how do you become a better swimmer?

  1. Believe in yourself. This is the most important of all. Trust in your ability to be able to get better and better with each swim.

  2. Learn to relax. This sounds simple enough to do, until you’re actually in the water. Teach your kids to never fight the water, but to relax and become comfortable while they’re in the pool.

  3. Set swimming goals. Just as you would set goals in other aspects of your life, setting swimming goals keeps kids motivated and allows them to feel a sense of accomplishment when the goals are achieved. They do not need to be massive goals, even just small steps towards becoming more comfortable in the water is a goal to be celebrated.

  4. Practice, practice, practice. Swimming, just like learning to play a musical instrument or riding a bike, requires practice. By practicing regularly, your kids can notice their progress and keep challenging themselves. Remember, practice makes perfect.

  5. Join a swimming family. Choosing to put your kids in swimming lessons can be a bit intimidating at first. But, choosing a committed swim family and being surrounded by a team of motivated swim instructors, will help make the most of your kids’ swimming experience and provide them with the support needed to become better swimmers.

Encouraging your child to follow these goals will increase their ability to improve dramatically.  Join our Swim Clo Aquatics swimming family by registering for our Spring swimming sessions. Registration opens Friday February 22nd, 2019 so mark that on your calendar to make sure you get your preferred swim time!  We provide a nurturing, learning environment for your child to practice and gain confidence in their swimming ability.

Swim Class Checklist: What your Toddler Needs

Swimming is among the best exercises for people of all ages. Choosing an early start to swimming can be hugely beneficial for both children and parents. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that learning to swim at a young can encourage healthy development in children, promoting their confidence in the water and allowing them to learn to crucial life skill. In addition, choosing swimming lessons for kids at a young age is also important for educating parents about water safety.

Your toddler’s first swimming lesson is both an amazing, and nerve-wracking experience. With all these emotions, it can become overwhelming to organize yourself. So, to help you prepare, we’ve made a checklist of all the essentials you’ll need to bring for your toddler’s first swim lesson:

  • Your toddler’s swimsuit - we suggest a comfortable one-piece, which is easy to slip on and off

  • Your toddler’s towel - we suggest a soft, hooded towel to keep your toddler’s body and head dry and warm

  • Swim diapers - we suggest bringing two pairs incase one rips or gets soiled, diapers are a requirement in most pools

  • Wipes - gentle cleansing wipes for children are a multi-purpose essential, quick and easy to use

  • Changing pad - can be useful to zip up your diapers and wipes inside

  • Lotion - the chemicals used to keep pool water clean can lead to dry skin, so a moisturizing lotion is an essential

  • Fresh change of clothes - we suggest bringing soft, comfortable, and loosely fitted clothing to change into after class

  • Healthy snacks and water - to fuel up and rehydrate after class

  • Backpack/ Tote bag - to carry all your swimming supplies

For parent’s who will be joining their toddler’s in the water, during their swim class, it is important to remember to bring your own swimsuit, towel, and toiletries.

Happy Swimming!

How Swimming Builds Confidence in Kids

Most parents know that swimming is a great form of physical activity for their kids. It helps exercise their cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and also provides strength-building benefits. But what many parents may not know, is that swimming classes also benefits their kids social and cognitive development. Teaching kids to swim at a young age can help build their self-confidence, encourage positive social skills, and prepare them for future success.

Studies have revealed that children who take part in swimming lessons from a younger age are better adapted to new situations, and have better self-confidence and independence than non-swimmers. Our swim classes encourage kids to take turns, share, cooperate, and encourage their peers. Furthermore, our classes teach kids to set goals in swimming and feel proud whenever they master a certain skill. All of these factors contribute to boosting your kids’ self-esteems, and encouraging them to be comfortable in an array of social situations.

In addition to boosting social confidence, kids swimming lessons have been shown to boost brain development. Research has found that kids who participated in swim classes scored higher for intelligence and problem-solving skills than non-swimmers. Learning to swim teaches kids self-discipline, self-control, and a desire to succeed. These skills prepare kids for academic success in the future, and the tools necessary to problem solve in a variety of situations.

Collectively, the benefits of physical exercise and confidence boosting make choosing swimming lessons for your little ones an unbeatable choice. Our winter swimming session is open for registration and runs fro January 2nd to March 24th. Build confidence in your children; register for Winter now!

Happy Swimming!

Why Should You Learn to Swim?

Parents may wonder why they should invest in swimming lessons for your children when they have other activities to pursue, but swimming is actually one of the activities that should not be neglected!  According to the Government of Canada, drowning is the leading cause of death amongst children aged 1-4 years of age. Red Cross reports that 57% of drowning incidents occurred between May and August. The best precaution a parent can provide their child is to enroll them in swimming lessons to teach them how they can avoid drowning, and possibly save someone’s life!

Unlike other sports, babies as young as 4 months of age can start swimming lessons, and is an activity that can be enjoyed life long.  Introducing them at a younger age to water in a safe environment can reduce their fear of water when they grow older. This will help speed their progression once they start lessons, as they won’t have to overcome a fear of getting into the water like some older children may have to.

Swimming is a competitive sport that your child can persue!  It’s great for cardiovascular and muscle development, and it has a lower impact on their joints than other land sports.  It can also be practiced all year round, indoors and outdoors, so it’s a very versatile sport. In addition, should your child choose to persue a career as a lifeguard, the career is financially rewarding and can be a full-time or part-time position.  We are also always looking for great candidates for swim instructors! Check http://www.swimclo.com/jobs/ for more information and if you refer a successful candidate to us, we’ll give you a $200 gift card to anywhere you choose!

Investing in your child’s swimming lessons now can help shape your child’s future physical, mental and financial career for success!  Winter swim lessons have opened for our South Surrey, Cloverdale, Abbotsford and Langley locations! Check http://www.swimclo.com/register/ for more info, and make sure to register early to get your preferred spot!

5 Things Your Swim Clo Instructor Does

Do you know what your swim instructor does to prepare for your child's lesson?  Read on to find out!

  1. They spend a lot of time preparing for your classes!  They rework and personalize your lesson plan before and after a session, and they worry about open house presentations.  Each lesson plan is personalized to your child, and they spend a lot of time revising techniques that suit your child’s learning ability.  They use their creativity skills to the maximum to think of new ways for your child to learn new techniques or to better grasp the concept of a technique.

  2. They miss spending time with their family!  Most swim classes run from 3-8pm, which means they are often in the pool spending time with their swim family rather than their own family at home.  They also often miss dinner, or eat a late dinner because they’re so busy preparing for your child’s success!

  3. Instructors are often waterlogged… they spend several hours in the pool with the students and by the end of the night, they get pruny, have achy feet, and smell permanently like chlorine!

  4. They want every kid to succeed.  They may be firm, and strongly encourage your child to get into the pool, but that’s because they want your child to be the best they can be.  Our instructors genuinely love teaching, and want your child to see the improvements they make after each lesson to gain the confidence they need to succeed.

  5. They admire each swim mom, dad, grandparent that is part of the community.    The amount of dedication you spend taking your child to swimming lessons and other extra-curricular activities is admirable. Your time is much appreciated by the instructors, and by all of us at Swim Clo Aquatics.  We wouldn’t be able to operate without your support, and we want to thank you for entrusting your child’s swimming lessons to us!

Our swim instructors have been carefully hand picked and have gone through rigorous testing and training before we hire them.  All our instructors have their NLS, WSI and SFA certification, have their criminal record check, and are great with kids! Why Swim All Year?

It seems natural to a lot of us that swimming lessons are a way of getinng ready for summer and so, come Fall and Winter, there is no reason to stay in lessons….. think again! Wondering why you should swim all year?

Swimming is an important skill that should be pursued for several reasons:

  1. There may be other sports, but swimming should be viewed as a life skill akin to reading and writing.  Swimming may in fact save your child’s life, or possibly another person’s life. Just like at school, consistant practice is important for your child to develop their swimming skills, which is why we encourage having lessons all year round as much as possible!  Without consistancy, your child will naturally regress and you’ll find that next Winter or Spring, your child (and your wallet) will be doing some catching up!

  2. Swimming is ranked by professionals as one of the top three sports because it develops coordination, cardiovascular and muscular endurance.  It’s also low stress on their joints and growing bones due to the hydrostatic pressure, and teaches them how to control their breathing which would be beneficial for children with high stress, allergies or anxiety.

  3. Are you worried your child will be too tired from being at school all day to participate in an after-school swimming lesson?  Your child has been sitting at school for the majority of the day; being physically active will actually give them more energy!  Health Canada recommends that children have at least 60 minutes of exercise per day. We offer swimming lessons from 30, 45 and 60 minutes to accommodate your child’s growing physical activity needs!

  4. Swimming in a small group with other students will help develop social skill in your child!  Our lessons have a maximum of 4 - 5 students per session. That means our swim instructors have an opportunity to create a special bond with the class, and also to your specific child!  Your child will also learn to work with the other students, and to also create a friendship with them as well!

Swimming is a great all-around activity that can be practiced all year round.  It doesn’t have any weather requirements, just a love for swimming! Let us help nurture your children’s love to learn by registering today for our Fall swimming session (Sept 4 - Dec 23) at
http://www.swimclo.com/register/

WHY SWIM DURING THE SUMMER?

It’s summer break and you’re thinking “school’s out, that means all activities are also on hold until September!” right?  That is a common way to think, but there are benefits to continuing lessons for your child during the summer. Your child worked hard to get where they are now, so why let that go to waste?  If they take a 4 month break, they’ll need another 2-3 sessions before they are back in form, which detracts from their overall growth. Consistency is key to retaining a skill on a permanent basis; without it, your child will naturally regress!

If you’re looking for a safe activity that will entertain your little ones over the summer, consider taking a summer session this year!  We are running sessions at all our 4 locations and we are quickly filling up so register today! Our summer sessions are short term commitments.  Each session is a 2 week camp, giving you the flexibility to travel around sessions! Summer swimming lessons are an accelerated program with lessons running 30, 45 or 60 minutes daily from Monday to Friday for 2 weeks!  We have lessons from the morning to the evening, which allows your child the flexibility to schedule your day.

Are you going on vacation and want to make sure your child is comfortable in the water?  Register for a summer session as a crash course to prepare your child! Summer lessons are ideal for young children to allow them to get comfortable in the water.  In addition, daily practices leads to a quicker progression in skills, and will make them stronger. The accelerated summer camps will help prepare your child for your summer vacation pool times!
